Requested Collab Projects

Eric B and Rakim started the trend of collaboration album, and we've seen many throughout the years (some very very good, some absolute shithousery that should never have graced the human ear) but there is still a lot of teased projects that are yet to come out, some rumoured and some purely based on fantasy. Here is some I think NEED to be made -

ASAP Rocky & Tyler, the Creator
For the last three or four years, these two have shown their obvious chemistry both on tracks and off them. From what started as an initial Twitter beef between ASAP Mob and Odd Future, has blossomed into a genuine chance of a project between these two, which first was hinted at on Tyler's cover of Kanye's 'Freestyle 4' titled 'WHAT THE FUCK RIGHT NOW' - which was just a video that featured Tyler spitting a version (which is much better than Kanye's) accompanied by Rocky in the studio. Rocky assisted Tyler again on Scum Fuck Flower Boy on the track 'Who Dat Boy' - another big tune - before a surprise release last September with the song 'Potato Salad', concluding with a tease for 'WANG$AP', something which had been speculated to be the title of the project when the rumours of it existing first began. Well that's it. Confirmed. It is happening. Until Tyler tweeted saying:

That is dead... for now. Damn. :(

Pusha T & Jay-Z
Not a collaboration that has been chased for a full length project, but having worked a lot together on Ye's MBDTF and the slick Drug Dealers Anonymous (BIG song) it is evident that their drug dealing past is something that transitions very cleanly from spoken word to fully fledged verses. A 10-12 track project with some features to break up the assumed repetitive nature of the content could be a dark house and may even rival Watch The Throne if done properly. Hearing some Eazy-E like tales of slinging within verses that are split up between some smooth vocal hooks from the likes of Miguel or Anderson Paak would be VERY nice.

Schoolboy Q & Vince Staples
The boys in blue. Hoover crip and LBC Crip teaming up for a full collab album would be the blue side vision that only Nate and Snoop could dream of. If they could reproduce an album's worth of tracks like their previous effort "Ride out" (Which I have already included in another post, read it here: The Orange Beanie - MUST Hear Features ) then it may make it's way into a list of my favourite ever releases. Nods to prior West Coast greats with a few of them even getting in for a feature would be a massive and could even be the modern G-Funk era that we so desperately deserve.

RIP Nate

YG & The Game
From Crip side to Bompton now, with YG and The Game being two of the biggest red side reppin' artists to ever exist. If it was possible to get YG's 'Still Brazy' sound and style and combine that with The Game's gritty, powerful delivery that is heard through his entire discography, we could have a West coast gang-banging classic. It would however be essential to choose the right producers for this to capture that funky LA sound. Dr Dre, Q-Tip, Primo and maybe even Madlib chipping in with beats would be incredible. None of this DJ Mustard shit.

JID & Isaiah Rashad
Rumours of these two working on something for Dreamville's upcoming 'Revenge of the Dreamers III' project was exciting enough, and I really hope we get to see it, but as long as it looks like Zay's follow up Album to The Sun's Tirade is delayed/unfinished, I need something more than just ONE potential song. JID is coming off the back of the very impressive Di Caprio 2, where he demonstrates his ridiculous ability to change flows, sometimes mid bar, and spit some very clever punchlines over some experimental and mysterious beats. The same type of beats that Isaiah is accustomed to, and no doubt the two of them would sound incredible together over some psychedelic instrumentals, through JID's unrelenting bars and Rashad's raspy vocals and his own lyrical style. Really REALLY want this to be a thing.

Denzel Curry & Joey Badass
With Denzel's aggressive, energetic delivery often over monstrous beats, it might sound surprising that his style would be suited to the subdued, low key, steely voice of Joey. But I very much believe that it would suit. Zel has shown he can adapt himself to that style, with his song TA13OO off the album of the same name, containing some darker lyrics that are delivered in a more sombre manor. That being said, Joey is a rapper that puts a lot of passion in his lyrics which can easily be heard, and I don't see him having any trouble matching the levels of rage that Denzel achieves in his more hyper tracks. Two artists that can mirror each other's style. Say no more.

Kendrick Lamar & J.Cole
Here we go. The one we've all been waiting for. When the fuck is this album going to come out? Is it ever going to come out? Does it exist? Who has heard it? Has it all been a SICK elaborate ruse?

2011 was the first year this was supposed to drop. Then it was pushed back to 2012. GKMC dropped, so it was pushed back. Born Sinner dropped, pushed back, again. 2014 FHD was worked on for nearly two years, no time for a collab album. So it was pushed back. Same story with TPAB, yet another push back. Then on Black Friday, 2015, they blessed us with remixes of each others tracks. Kendrick hopped on Cole's 'A Tale of 2 Citiez', whilst Cole did his own take of Kendrick's 'Alright'...

... Cole ends his with a lyric that all but confirmed the LONG awaited project from these two was coming in February 2016. This is it. It is done and were getting it, with these two at their peak of their careers at the time, about to bless us with what we've been crying out for.

Listen to both the remixes here: Black Friday Remix - J. Cole & Kendrick Lamar

Yet here we are, 1,024 days later, and it still isn't here. Teases upon teases from both of them and other artists from their respective labels both adding to the speculation within interviews, but with no success. Will we ever see it? WILL WE?

I will wrap it up here before the stress of the last album not being in my eardrums causes a breakdown. These albums are absolutely something I need to hear and will not be satisfied until I do so.

Thanks for reading xx

Jay Rock Redemption Tour

No posting for over a week, slacking behind smh. Last Monday, east-side Johnny McKenzie aka Johnny McKenzie aka Jay Rock blessed Brixton with his presence for the European stretch of The Big Redemption Tour. I was fortunately not too crippled by University work to go and TDE's original member did not disappoint. But before we got to see the man himself, TDE vlogger and and apparent DJ Mackwop came out on his own to get the crowd extra pumped for the opening of the show, admittedly in quite a cheap way by playing a lot of Kendrick's DAMN (which is a guaranteed buzz for anybody there) thrown in between other turn up anthems like Mo Bamba (which tbh i don't like but when it is loud af and you're amongst a crowd of people it does slap I must say) before the moment we were all waiting for arrived and Rock stepped onto the stage. His entire set was an almost faultless track list, with him bringing his top songs and even a few of his best feature verses that also

Welcome to The Orange Beanie

Hello Ladies and Gents, welcome to The Orange Beanie. This is a blog that is purely for anything Hip Hop & Rap related and will included a range of topics, including artist discussions, album and single reviews, music videos, best of/worst of, personal favourites etc.  So stay and hear what I have to say, or don't - not gonna release a diss track. Will aim to upload 3-5 times a week about whatever topic is mot relevant at that time (or if I just get bored and want to put something up) It is called The Orange Beanie based on the cult epidemic of some Hip Hop/Music GOATS being spotted wearing Orange Beanie hats with no real explanation lmao. Feel free to follow me on Twitter, I tweet about rap a lot: @Michael17THFC Real G's move in silence like Lasagne.

The re-branding of J. Cole

Jermaine Lamar Cole. One of my favourite artists ever, dropping some of the best hip-hop anthems and stories I've heard in recent years. He's managed to climb to the top and has harnessed support and praise from his peers, which is more than deserved. However, he's not always been the story telling, platinum with no features, long-dreaded don that he is today. He has actually had a mad turnaround that saw him ditch his Drake copycat persona into a unique and distinctive artist that has put him at the top of the game. A turnaround so impressive that it needs to be broken down and looked at further, imo.  2009. The rise of "soft rap" was everywhere, with Drake being at the forefront of this after signing with Lil Wayne, exposing the world to his wannabe street G lyrics and songs, even though he came from a fairly wealthy family and lived in the suburbs of Toronto - hardly a struggle. As this sound was taking over, it is no surprise that the up and coming rapp
